Attaching Guitar Blank to a Sacrificial Piece of MDF
We are building a Telecaster Style Guitar body using the Vision 2550 CNC Router. We have already created the blank for the body which you can read about at this link Making Telecaster Guitar Part 1. Before we can begin machining the blank, it must first be mounted to a piece of sacrificial material. This allows us to cut all the way through our blank without damaging the CNC Router’s T-slot Table. We’ve selected a piece of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) that is slightly larger than the blank, which will leave room for clamps around the edge of the sacrificial.
The following materials were used:
- Transfer paper (low tack tape that comes in large rolls)
- Squeegee
- Utility knife
- Multi-purpose spray adhesive
- MDF Sacrificial
Step 1:
Apply transfer tape to the bottom of the blank, we used a squeegee to remove any air bubbles.
Step 2:
Apply transfer tape to the top of the MDF sacrificial making sure to remove any air bubbles.
Step 3:
Spray on a multi-purpose spray adhesive on the blank and sacrificial, spray the side that is covered with transfer tape.
Step 4:
Center the blank with the adhesive side facing down on to the sacrificial with the adhesive side facing up.
Step 5:
The two pieces were clamped together for an hour allowing the spray adhesive to dry. A piece of scrap wood was placed on top of the blank to prevent any damage that may be caused by the clamps.
Using the spray adhesive by itself would hold the blank to the sacrificial very securely, however the strength of the adhesive would make it difficult to separate the two pieces without damaging the guitar blank in the process. The transfer tape allows us to separate the guitar blank from the sacrificial without damage.
With our guitar blank mounted securely on our sacrificial we are ready to start machining our blank on the 2550 CNC router. For our next post we are going to look at cuts and what bits we are going to be using.
